Embroiderers must possess solid painting skills, blending thread colors like mixing pigments, and using the interweaving of lines to express light and shadow changes as well as the three-dimensionality of objects. Particularly suitable for creating embroidery works in an oil painting style, this stitch can vividly depict the layered gradients of landscapes and the expressions of characters, delivering a powerful visual impact.
The *seed stitch* stands out for its distinctive three-dimensional texture, becoming a highly recognizable stitch in Suzhou embroidery. Its operation involves winding the embroidery thread around the needle tip several times before inserting it into the fabric, forming round and plump "seeds". These seeds are arranged in a well-spaced manner to create vivid patterns. The three-dimensional seeds of the seed stitch have a prominent tactile feel, and are often used to embroider detailed parts such as flower stamens, fruits and bird feathers. They can not only enrich the layers of the embroidery work but also make the objects appear more vivid and lifelike. Handmade Process
The Silk Art process begins with tightly stretching a silk fabric over a wooden frame. The design is then roughly outlined, directly on the fabric. At that point, the artist begins stitching the most intricate parts of the pattern with tiny needles and colorful silk threads, bringing the image to life.
Each strand of silk fiber can be divided in up to 16 individual threads. 1/16 of a strand of silk thread is finer than a human hair. The thinner the thread, the finer the art work. The artist then builds layers of threads of varying colors and thicknesses to create dimension, shadows, and highlights. A small piece of Silk Art takes one artist a few days to complete, a masterpiece may take several artists a few years to bring to the final stage.
